Adams Mill and Mill Pond
Map #5

Mill Pond

The Allen Mill Pond resulted from construction of a dam or "trap" at the head waters of Passerdyke Creek. We know that John Adams, a son of the Reverend Alexander Adams, rector of Stepney Parish (Green Hill Church) from 1709 to 1769, owned the mill in 1763. It is quite probable, however, that a mill stood on the spot even earlier than that date. The mill was operated by Adams descendants until c. 1844. It continued to operate under various owners until 1919, when a storm washed out the milldam and the county decided to widen the bridge. The old mill was razed at that time. The last miller was Mr. Beverly Hitch. The mill stones can still be seen on the property, on the right side of the Allen Road, going south toward Princess Anne.
