Allen African American School
Map #3

Currently the Educational & Community Hall for Friendship United Methodist Church, facing it on the Upper Ferry Road, this school for Allen's African American population in the days of segregation was built in 1895. Records show an earlier school existing on the Old Allen Road as early as 1877 and probably dating to 1872, when Maryland State law required Boards of Education to provide at least one public school in every election district for Black children. The Allen School functioned until 1955, when local students were bused to a new school in Fruitland.
