Friendship United Methodist Church
Map # 2

Friendship Church was founded in 1864 as a house of worship for African-American residents of the village of
Allen. It was part of the Delaware Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, made up entirely of Black congregations. According to local tradition, the former slaves had worshiped not only in the balcony of Asbury, but also in a sheep barn on the Bob Jones farm on Wicomico Creek near Reddings Ferry. The original building was 20' by 24'. Early leaders of the congregation were Samuel Solomon, Jacob Cottman, and Aaron Gale. Rufus Fields, a local farmer and member of the congregation, contributed the land for the cemetery.
